Rebel Netters Advance To Quarterfinals At ITA Southeast Regional

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Playing four matches in one day, Ole Miss men's tennis standout sophomore Erling Tveit advanced to the quarterfinals of singles at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships Saturday, and then teamed up with junior Eric Claesson to reach the quarterfinals in doubles at the Racquet Club.
Tveit, ranked No. 43 in the nation, defeated a pair of Georgia Bulldogs to reach the singles quarterfinals. In the third round, he rallied to beat Colin Purcell, 5-7, 7-5, 6-4. Later, he went three more sets with Bulldog Strahinja Bobusic, before coming out a winner, 7-5, 6-7, 6-3. Tveit will face Kentucky newcomer Bruno Agostinelli Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
Following his singles matches, Tveit and Claesson defeated Ryan Fitzgerald and Arturo Navarro of Tennessee-Chattanooga, 8-5, in the second round of doubles. In the round of 16, the duo downed the No. 9 seeded team of Josh Cohen and Eric Hechtman of Miami, 8-3. Tveit and Claesson will meet the No. 5 seed, Colt Gaston and Danny Bryan of LSU, in the quarterfinals Sunday.
The Southeast is arguably the top tennis region in the country with four teams finishing the 2005 season ranked among the nation's top 10, including Ole Miss at No. 3. Eight teams from the region ended the year in the top 25.
The winners of the singles and doubles this weekend qualify for the ITA National Indoor Championships, the second college major, to be held Nov. 3-6 in Columbus, Ohio.
