MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Ole Miss men's tennis sophomore Erling Tveit captured the ITA Southeast Regional Championship Monday, at the Racquet Club of Memphis, earning the region's automatic berth into the ITA National Indoor Championships in November.
Tveit, the No. 5 seed, took out Middle Tennessee's Andreas Silejstrom in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, to win the 128-player singles field, which featured 25 of the nation's top players. With the title, Tveit improved to 10-2 this fall, and became the fourth Rebel to reach 10 wins.
On his way to the title, Tveit posted two three-set victories against players from Georgia. In the quarterfinals he defeated Kentucky newcomer Bruno Agostinelli in straight sets, and then in the semifinals, Tveit beat teammate Eric Claesson.
The Southeast is arguably the top tennis region in the country with four teams finishing the 2005 season ranked among the nation's top 10, including Ole Miss at No. 3. Eight teams from the region ended the year in the top 25.
The 2005 SEC Champion Rebels showed once again that they will be one of the top teams in the Southeast Region in 2006, as a total of five players reached the third round in singles with Claesson and Tveit advancing.
On his way to the semifinals, Claesson posted several ranked wins, including beating Miami's Josh Cohen, ranked No. 20 in the country.
"It was a great weekend for the entire team," head coach Billy Chadwick said. "We played good from top to bottom. We are very excited about Erling bringing home the title. We have had a great fall, and we look forward to continuing the success in our last two tournaments."
The ITA National Indoor Championships, the second college major, will be held Nov. 3-6 in Columbus, Ohio.
