FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Continuing a theme in Southeastern Conference play, the Ole Miss soccer team (9-3-0, 3-1-0 SEC) defeated the Arkansas Lady Razorbacks (4-7-0, 1-3-0) 1-0 on Sunday for its third 1-0 victory of league play and second in a row.
In fact, all four of the Rebels' SEC matches have had the same score, including three wins and one loss.
This time it was junior Brittney Potts with the game-winner, as she put the ball in the upper-left corner of the net from 20 yards out at the 67:34 mark in the second half, with the assist from freshman Leslie Robichaux.
The teams were knotted at zero for the majority of the match. The Lady `Back defense held the Rebels to five first-half shots, while Arkansas had six first-half shots including one that hit the crossbar.
"We were really frustrated in the first half," said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman. "Arkansas played a low pressure defense that made it difficult for us to get behind them and create opportunities. Arkansas definitely had the better chances in the first half, and they could have easily taken the lead."
The Rebels made some halftime adjustments and were able to possess the ball more in the second half and get more scoring opportunities. Ole Miss out-shot Arkansas 4-1 in the second period.
Sophomore Christine Liberto just missed giving Ole Miss the lead when a shot off of her foot hit the crossbar.
Potts finished the match with a team-high five shots, including two on goal, while also notching her second goal of the season for the game-winning score.
"We were able to create a better rhythm," Holeman said. "We made some tactical adjustments and played a lot better and had more opportunities. We were able to deny Arkansas opportunities as well.
"It's great to be 3-1 in the SEC at this point. To win three out of four on the road to start SEC play with such a young team is especially gratifying."
Sophomore goalkeepers Ann Shelton and Megan Vickery again combined for the Rebel shutout. Shelton saved two shots in the first half, while the Ole Miss defense did not allow a shot on goal while Vickery manned the net in the second period. They also combined for the shutout against LSU on Friday night.
Ole Miss will return to Oxford to host Alabama on Friday at 7 p.m. CT. The first 250 fans at the match will receive a free "Red Alert" t-shirt as part of Ole Miss Sports Marketing's "Make the Tide See Red Night."
