OXFORD, Miss. - The 59th-ranked Ole Miss women's tennis team dominated in doubles and never looked back in singles on their way to a dominating 7-0 win over Troy University Thursday afternoon at the Gillom Sports Center. The match had to be played indoors due to the cold temperatures in the area.
The Lady Rebels got on the board first by sweeping the doubles in convincing fashion. The All-SEC duo of Chloe Carlotti and Virginia Tomatis improved to 13-4 overall and 7-1 at No. 1 doubles with an 8-3 win. Ole Miss won 8-1 at No. 2 and 8-2 at No. 3.
Sophomore Ilona Somers gave the Lady Rebels a 2-0 lead when she downed Troy's Claudia Strauss, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Somers improved to 7-1 at No. 2 singles and has won seven in a row.
Tomatis trailed 3-4 early in her first set against Shamia Elsisi of Troy, but rebounded nicely to win nine straight games for a 6-4, 6-0 victory and a 3-0 Ole Miss lead. She improved to 6-1 at No. 3 singles.
Carlotti, ranked No. 34 in the nation, got off to a slow start in singles, but she showed why she is one of the top players in the country. She was tied 5-5 with Troy's Tsitsi Masviba in the first set and never lost another game, to win going away 7-5, 6-0 and clinch the team victory. Carlotti won her eighth consecutive match and has now won 10 of her last 11. She owns an impressive combined record of 14-1 in singles and doubles.
"We made them look worse than they are," head coach Mark Beyers said. "We played with a lot of intensity. They tested us in a couple first sets, but once we got them, we turned it up. We talked about not just getting a win, but improving in every match. We did that."
The Lady Rebels did not drop a set in any of the matches as they won the all three of the remaining courts in straight sets as well. Freshmen Nika Koukhartchouk downed Suzanne Jones 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 singles. Mimi Renaudin only allowed her opponent, Christina Mancheno, one game in a 6-0, 6-1 rout at No. 5 singles. Preethi Subramanian completed the sweep with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Trojan Nicole Shaw.
Ole Miss now gets ready to start SEC play next weekend against a pair of top 10 foes. The Lady Rebels will travel to Nashville, Tenn., Friday, March 4 to play No. 6 Vanderbilt at 2:30 p.m., and then continue on to Lexington, Ky., to face No. 7 Kentucky Sunday, March 6 at Noon.
