OXFORD, Miss. - Current Ole Miss soccer players will take a shot at Rebel greats from the past Saturday in the program's annual alumni match, as part of Red-Blue Weekend on the Ole Miss campus. The action kicks off at 10 a.m. CT at Ole Miss Soccer Stadium and is free to the public.
Among the former players expected to compete are All-SEC Rebels Kristin Chapman, Brittany Gillespie, Kristal Menard and Amy Sample along with SEC single-season and single-game assist leader Leah Rutledge and Ole Miss' No. 2 all-time goal-scorer Tammy Zegledi. Others include Leigh Barrow, Lindley Beckman, Courtney Biddle, Erin Cooper, Jen Curry, Erin Edmundson, Karen Hall, Laura Price, Amaris Weeks, Heather Hopson and current Rebel assistant coach Melinda Smith.
"The alumni weekend is one of the highlights of our year," said head coach Steve Holeman, who has been with the program since its inception in 1994. "It's always great to see all the familiar faces back in Oxford. With all the talent on the field, the game is a wonderful display of quality soccer combined with a very fun environment."
The match is the second of three spring home events for the Rebels, who dominated the Ole Miss 7 Aside Tournament last weekend. The two Rebel squads both finished unbeaten and advanced to the finals, where the Blue team prevailed in a shootout. With Megan Vickery in goal, the Blue coasted through the tourney without surrendering a goal, outscoring the opposition 31-0 in posting a 4-0 record. Kelly Renie led all scorers in the tournament with 14 goals, recording no less than a hat trick in every game.
In full-squad action this offseason, Ole Miss is also unbeaten at 2-0-1, with victories over the Japan College All-Stars 6-0 and Southern Miss 3-0 and a 1-1 tie with two-time Conference USA champion UAB. Renie has netted a team-high 3 goals this spring, while freshmen Amy Gill and Christine Liberto have each scored twice.
The Rebels' final home exhibition action of the season will be the Ole Miss Club Team Invitational, Apr. 23 in Oxford.
