BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - After scoring a goal in each of her first two collegiate matches, Ole Miss' Amanda Verkin of Sugar Land, Texas, was honored as the Southeastern Conference's Freshman of the Week in soccer, announced Monday afternoon by the league office.
Verkin is actually the first-ever SEC Freshman of the Week honoree in soccer, as the new category is being instituted beginning this fall in all SEC sports currently fielding a postseason All-Freshman Team.
The freshman, who graduated from St. Agnes Academy this past spring, scored the first goal in both of the Rebels' wins over the weekend, a 2-1 victory over Tennessee Tech on Friday night and a 2-0 shutout of Iowa State on Sunday. On both scores, she beat a defender and punched the ball in the net from close range.
She is the first Ole Miss freshman to score in her first two matches since Ashley Ferree made goals in her first four collegiate matches in 2003.
Verkin and the rest of the Rebel squad are hoping to continue the season's good start when they travel to Orlando, Fla., for matches against Kent State and UCF in the UCF Invitational this weekend.
