OXFORD, Miss. - The Rebels of Ole Miss (6-2-0) closed out their 2005 non-conference schedule in dominating fashion with a 3-0 shutout of Charlotte (3-4-0), allowing just two shots to the 49ers in the Friday night contest at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.

"I am really glad to get a win to end our non-conference schedule," said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman, who now owns a 2-0 career record over Charlotte. "It really helps build our confidence to play as well as we did offensively against a pretty solid defense."

The Rebel defense dominated the first period as it did not allow a 49er shot, while the offense managed 10 shots and two goals before halftime.

The Rebels got off to a quick start offensively, as they had four shots through the first 10 minutes of play, including two headers by junior defender Lyndsey Williams that just cleared the crossbar. Williams would have to leave the match later due to a leg injury, snapping her streak of playing every minute this season.

Ole Miss scored its first goal at the 23:53 mark when senior forward Kelly Renie knocked in a 20-yarder from the left corner of the box. Junior forward Brittney Potts provided the assist. The goal was Renie's second of the season and 30th career goal, which ties her for third all-time in the Ole Miss record books with Jennifer Soileau (1997-2000) and Regan Scanlon (1997-2000).

"It was really important to get on the board early," Holeman added. "(Charlotte) plays a low-pressure defense, so it was important to get started early and then continue to play well the rest of the match."

The Rebels added another goal fifteen minutes later when strong-footed freshman Jennifer Hance crossed up the Charlotte goalie with a boot to the far side from about 10 yards out. It was Hance's third goal of the season, which ties her for the team lead with sophomore Chrissy Strini.

The Rebels scored their third goal in the 85th minute in the second half when Potts cleared the goalie's hands to give Potts, who was last year's leading goal scorer, her first score of the season. The three goals marked the highest scoring output by the Rebels this year.

Ole Miss goalkeeper Ann Shelton played her first complete game of the season and earned the shutout and victory by saving both of Charlotte's shots. It was Ole Miss' fourth team shutout of the season.

For the game, the Rebels out-shot the 49ers 17-2, while the corner kick tally was 4-2 in favor of Ole Miss.

The Rebels have a week away from the competition field to tune up for the conference opener at Georgia next Friday, Sept. 23. They will travel to Knoxville, Tenn. the following Sunday to take on the Lady Vols in the second match of three away from Oxford.
