BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - For the third time in four weeks, Ole Miss had a soccer player named to one of three SEC Player of the Week categories, as sophomore goalkeeper Ann Shelton was honored as the Defensive Player of the Week by the league office on Monday for her performance against Memphis and Charlotte.
On Tuesday, Shelton relieved fellow sophomore Megan Vickery at the end of the first half against Memphis, with Ole Miss holding on to a 3-2 lead. Shelton shut down the Tigers the rest of the game, saving two shots on goal and helping the Rebels to a 3-2 victory.
The Tullahoma, Tenn. native then posted a shutout in the 3-0 win over Charlotte on Friday, which was her first complete game shutout of the year and the Rebels' fourth team shutout win on the season.
Shelton, who made the SEC's All-Freshman team a year ago, helped anchor a defense that only allowed two shots to the 49ers, which were both saved by Shelton.
Ole Miss had no players honored as an SEC Player of the Week in 2004, while they already have three this season. Amanda Verkin was named SEC Freshman of the Week after scoring in her first two collegiate matches in Week 1, while Jennifer Hance earned the same honors after her Tourament MVP performance at the UCF Invitational in Week 2.
The Rebels enter conference play this weekend with road matches against Georgia on Friday and Tennessee on Saturday.
