BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - For the second week in a row, an Ole Miss freshman has received SEC Soccer's Freshman of the Week Award, as Jennifer Hance from Sugar Land, Texas, was named the recipient in an announcement by the league office Tuesday morning.
Hance and fellow rookie Amanda Verkin, who were teammates in the Texas Premier League growing up, have been the first two honorees of the new award instituted by the Southeastern Conference this season.
Ole Miss dominated the UCF Invitational in Orlando, Fla., over the holiday weekend, defeating No. 27 UCF and defending MAC Champion Kent State with 2-0 shutouts in both matches.
Hance was named the Invitational's Offensive MVP after scoring the game-winning goal against UCF with a driving kick into the lower left corner of the net off a free kick. She also helped anchor a midfield that produced four of the Rebels' five players on the All-Tournament squad.
In addition to the two players of the week, a Rebel freshman has scored in each of the first four matches, and six different newcomers have received starting nods through the first four games. Ten of Ole Miss' 23 players on this year's squad are freshmen.
Ole Miss returns to Oxford for matches this week against Saint Louis on Thursday at 7 p.m. CT and No. 14 Florida State on Sunday at Noon.
