Ole Miss Soccer Suffers First Setback of Season

OXFORD, Miss. - After a 4-0 start to the season, Ole Miss suffered its first loss Thursday night, a 2-1 setback to Saint Louis at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium. It was the second year in a row the Billikens (4-1-0) have defeated the Rebels, after winning 3-0 last year in St. Louis.
"It's tough anytime you lose, especially after how we came back strong in the second half," said Rebel head coach Steve Holeman. "But it's tough to win them all. We're disappointed, but it's just one game. We've got to move forward and prepare for the next one."
Saint Louis scored the first goal of the game in the 8th minute, as two Billiken players got past the defense for a close-range tap-in by Liz Fox.
The score remained 1-0 throughout the first half, as Saint Louis controlled possession for the majority of the period. It was the first time this season that Ole Miss went into halftime with a deficit.
The Rebels came out firing in the second half and scored at the 49:02 mark when freshman Jennifer Hance, who was recently named SEC Freshman of the Week, headed the ball into the upper right corner of the net for her second goal of the season. Sophomore Chrissy Strini was credited with the assist after receiving a corner kick from senior Hillary Beckman. Strini's team-leading points total moved to seven with the assist (2 G, 3 A).
With just under six minutes remaining and the game knotted at 1-1, Saint Louis' Kelly Ferguson scored on a header for what would be the game-winning goal.
The physical nature of the match was evidenced by the 30 total fouls issued. Saint Louis had 16, while Ole Miss was called for 14 penalties.
The Rebels out-shot the Billikens 13-8, including 8-3 in the second half.
Sophomore goalkeepers Megan Vickery and Ann Shelton again split time between the posts, as Vickery played the entire first half and Shelton played the majority of the second period. Each registered one save and one goal surrendered.
Saint Louis' Amanda Martin earned the win with four saves and one goal allowed.
"We just have to go out and do what we have to do to win games," Holeman added. "You practice to get opportunities in a game, and we did a good job of getting those opportunities tonight. We just didn't capitalize on them."
Ole Miss hopes to capitalize on its opportunities when the Rebels face No. 12 Florida State (5-0-0) here in Oxford on Sunday at Noon. Sunday is "Armed Forces Day" at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium. All men or women who have served in the Armed Forces will receive complimentary admission.
