ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - Mike Mercer scored five points in the final minute as Georgia beat Mississippi 72-65 Saturday, ending the Rebels' seven-game winning streak.

After Ole Miss cut Georgia's lead to four points at 64-60, Mercer converted a three-point play with 51 seconds left. Mercer added a layup with 36 seconds left for a 69-60 lead.

Mercer led Georgia (12-6 overall, 2-3 Southeastern Conference) with 14 points. Sundiatta Gaines added 12 and Dave Bliss set a season high with 10 points.

Ole Miss (13-4, 3-1) was denied its first 4-0 start in conference games since the 1936-37 season.

Dwayne Curtis, who had only four points in the first half, led Ole Miss with 19 points. Clarence Sanders added 12.

With Ole Miss committing five turnovers in the first 3:35, Georgia took an early 15-4 lead. The Rebels had only four turnovers the rest of the half and trailed 36-30 at halftime.

Levi Stukes, who leads Georgia with 12.2 points per game, hit a 3-pointer early in the second half for his first points and a 39-30 lead. Georgia didn't score again for more than five minutes.

Stukes finished with eight points.

The Rebels finally caught and passed the Bulldogs, 47-46, on a three-point play by Curtis with 10:35 left.

Georgia answered a minute later with a 3-pointer by Billy Humphrey to spark an 8-0 run, giving the Bulldogs a 54-47 lead. A 3-pointer by Brian Smith pulled the Rebels back to within 54-50, but that was as close as Ole Miss would come.

Smith, the son of Kentucky coach and former Georgia coach Tubby Smith, matched his season high with eight points.
