Ole Miss Rifle Completes Weekend Matches

Martin, Tenn. - The Ole Miss rifle team completed a weekend of shooting on Sunday at the University of Tennessee-Martin.

The Rebels finished third overall in the invitational, which consisted of teams from Alabama-Birmingham, Austin Peay, Jacksonville State, Memphis, Mercer, Missouri- Kansas City, Murray State, Ohio State, Tennessee Tech and the host school, Tennessee-Martin. Ole Miss finished with an aggregate score of 4620.

Junior All-America Jennifer Lorenzen led the way for Ole Miss with a score of 584 in the air rifle competition. Senior Megan Sandage and Lorenzen tied for the team led in the smallbore with a score of 582. Other air rifle scores included Natasha Phillips (577), Samantha Leach (574), Casey Phillips (573) and Megan Sandage (572). Other smallbore scores included Samantha Leach (575), Casey Phillips (574) and Natasha Phillips (570).

On Saturday the Rebels competed in the Withrow Invitational in Murray, Ky., hosted by Murray State.

The Withrow Invitational included the school participating at Tennessee-Martin, plus the University of Kentucky. Ole Miss finished third overall, with a final score of 4639, which was the Rebels second highest score of the season. Kentucky took the overall title with an aggregate score of 4667.

Senior Megan Sandage set a career high in the smallbore with a score of 586, to led Ole Miss. Her previous best was 574 set last season versus Kentucky. Senior Samantha Leach was the Rebels' top performer in the air rifle with a score of 586. Also competing the air rifle were Megan Sandage (582), Jennifer Lorenzen (578), Natasha Phillips (577), Casey Phillips (573) and Mara Polonsky (571). Other smallbore scores included Jennifer Lorenzen (583), Samantha Leach (574), Casey Phillips (573), Mara Polonsky (564) and Natasha Phillips (561).

"We really had a great day at Murray," said Ole Miss head coach Valerie Booth. "We increased our chances of qualifying for the NCAA tournament, which was our goal. Megan really stepped up for us. We did not perform as well at Martin. Megan had some equipment issues and as a team we were just not as on top of our game. However, it showed me what we should focus on before Kentucky."

Ole Miss travels to Lexington, Ky. on February 4, to face the University of Kentucky.
