Rebels Play To Scoreless Draw With Kentucky
10/22/2006 | Soccer
In the final home game for five Ole Miss seniors, the Rebels (7-6-5, 3-2-5 SEC) had their chances, including several shots late in regulation and in overtime that were tantalizingly close. The Rebels had one goal called back in the 76th minute due to an offsides penalty.
“Today was a frustrating day for us,” said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman. “It was frustrating in that we played a pretty good game. We had several opportunities to score and for whatever reason, we just couldn’t put one in the back of the net. We created opportunities. We pinned them deep inside their own territory several times, and we just couldn’t get it done. We deserved to win this one, but we just came up short.”

The Rebels continued their strong play on defense, notching their eighth shutout of the season and sixth in league play. Junior goalkeeper Ann Shelton pitched her 15th career shutout and vaulted past current assistant coach Melinda Smith for second place on the all-time Rebel charts.
Ole Miss out-shot
Despite some quality scoring chances, the offense could not score a goal and have now been shutout in four straight matches, including two ties and two defeats.
“We are just in a scoring slump,” Holeman said. “It happens. I felt that if we scored a goal, we would probably score two or three more. But that didn’t happen.”
Senior forward Brittney Potts fired a team-high four shots. She, senior defender Elise Karlowicz and junior midfielder Chrissy Strini each collected two shots on goal.
The Rebels’ closest scoring chances came in the 76th minute, when freshman forward Hannah Weatherly scored a goal from five yards, but the Rebels were called offsides, and in the 77th minute when Potts fired a free kick just over the crossbar.
