10/27/2006 | Men's Basketball
OXFORD, Miss. A crowd of almost 500 received an early look at Andy Kennedy’s Ole Miss basketball team Friday night, as the Rebels held an open practice for the fans at Tad Smith Coliseum.
After taking part in drills, the team split up for two 12-minute halves in an intra-squad battle that saw the White team defeat the Blue team 40-37. Clarence Sanders connected on 3-of-6 3-pointers to lead the White with 11 points. He pumped in 35 Saturday in directing his unit to a victory in the Rebels’ first scrimmage of the preseason.
Also for the White, fellow senior guard Bam Doyne tallied 9 points, while Trey Hampton scored 7. Jermey Parnell posted 6 points and 6 rebounds, and Todd Abernethy added 3 points, 4 boards, 3 assists and 2 steals.
Using a cordless microphone, Kennedy provided the crowd with running commentary during the 90-minute workout. Afterwards, he said the team was tired but played hard.
“I thought the effort wasn’t bad,” said Kennedy. “We had already gone for two hours today, so fatigue was definitely a factor.”
As Ole Miss concludes its second full week of practice, Kennedy said he has been pleased with the players’ mindset as they shift into his new up-tempo style of play.
“I have really liked the team’s attitude this preseason,” he said. “They have been really open. It’s not an easy transition. We have to teach them the things that we want them to do.
“I’ve been really pleased with the play along the frontline. They have really been stepping up in place of Dwayne (Curtis, who is out with a stress fracture to his left foot).”
