Ole Miss Netters To Conclude Fall Season This Weekend

10/31/2006 | Men's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. The Ole Miss men’s tennis team returns to the courts this weekend at two different tournaments, as they conclude the fall.  Erling Tveit will begin competing in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Columbus, Ohio as the No. 8 seed, while the rest of the squad will be in Athens, Ga., at the Bulldog Scramble.

The indoor championships, the year’s second major, features a 32-player singles field and 16-team doubles field for men and women.  Play begins Thursday at the Racquet Club of Columbus.

Tveit, ranked No. 8 in the nation, was not able to play in the ITA Southeast Regional Championship due to pulling a muscle in his back, so he applied for and received a wildcard into the ITA National Indoor.  Head coach Billy Chadwick said Tveit is ready to go.

“Erling is feeling fine and looking forward to a great tournament,” Chadwick said. “He has had two good days of practice.  This is one of the toughest tournaments with the top players in the nation in the draw, so there are no easy matches.”

Tveit, a 2006 NCAA Semifinalist, will meet Zach Ganger of Utah in the first round not before 5:30 p.m., Thursday.  This marks the second year in a row for Tveit to compete in the national indoor, having advanced to the second round at last year’s event.  Ganger earned a spot in the draw by capturing the Mountain Regional Championships.

The rest of the Rebel squad will begin competition in the Bulldog Scramble Friday, which includes players from Georgia, South Carolina and East Tennessee State.
