Ole Miss Rifle Opens Season Hosting Ole Miss Invitational

OXFORD, Miss. The Ole Miss Rebel rifle team opened its 2006-07 season by hosting the Ole Miss Invitational over the weekend at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center. The event, which was held over three weeks, featured 14 teams and almost 100 shooters.

 

The Rebels, led by 2006 All-Americans Jennifer Lorenzen and Shannon Wilson, finished third overall in the team standings with an aggregate score of 4563. Jacksonville State won the event with a score of 4640 and Murray State finished second with a score of 4604.

 

Lorenzen led the way for the Rebels finishing second in the smallbore with a score of 577, while Wilson turned in a score of 572 in the smallbore to finish fifth. Also shooting smallbore for Ole Miss was Mara Polonsky (557), Jessica Hornby (551), Casey Phillips (546) and Pam Smith (534). The Rebels finished with a team smallbore aggregate of 2257.

 

Polonsky led the Rebels with an air rifle score of 578 to finish 15th overall. Also shooting air rifle was Lorenzen (577), Wilson (576), Hornby (575), Phillips (568), Smith (564) and Jessica McClain (555). Ole Miss finished with an aggregate air rifle score of 2306.

 

“I thought we performed OK,” said head coach Valerie Boothe, who was named the 2006 National Coach of the Year by the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association. “We were able to put some decent scores, but we still have work to do to get to the level we need to be. The good thing is that we have time to correct our mistakes.”

 

Ole Miss also participated in the Tiger Invitational, hosted by the University of Memphis, on Oct. 5. The Rebels turned in an aggregate score of 4522 and were led by Shannon Wilson who finished with an air rifle score of 579 and a smallbore score of 574.

 

Ole Miss heads to Lincoln, Neb. on Oct. 13 to face the University of Nebraska and Army in.
