OXFORD, Miss. The Ole Miss Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame will honor Mike Glenn of Memphis, Tenn., with its Contribution to Amateur Football Award and Curtis Weathers of Memphis with the Distinguished American Award here Saturday prior to the Ole Miss - Northwestern State game. Kickoff at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium/Hollingsworth Field is set for 1 p.m.
The Contribution to Amateur Football Award is given by the Ole Miss Chapter in honor of those who have made numerous contributions to the college athletic world through a lifetime of service to their fellow man, while the Distinguished American Award is presented to individuals who have carried the lessons learned on the football field into a life of service to his community.
"We are pleased to honor these two men for their many contributions to Ole Miss athletics," said Frank Crosthwait, president of the Ole Miss Chapter. "They are most deserving of this recognition."
Glenn is executive vice president of Market Development and Corporate Communications for FedEx Corporation, a $33 billion global transportation and logistics holding company. He is a member of the five-person Executive Committee, responsible for planning and executing the corporation's strategic business activities.
Glenn also serves as president and chief executive officer of FedEx Corporate Services, responsible for all marketing, sales, and information technology functions for all FedEx Corporation operating companies.
After graduating from Ole Miss in 1977, Glenn has never drifted far from his local roots and has continued to support his University in so many ways. His influence was very instrumental in the creation of the FedEx Academic Support Center at Ole Miss. The center will provide state-of-the-art computer facilities and space for study halls and tutoring for men and women athletes, as well as additional classrooms for all students.
Before FedEx Corporation was formed in January 1998, Glenn was senior vice president, Worldwide Marketing, Customer Service and Corporate Communications for FedEx, a position he held for five years. In that role, he was responsible for directing all marketing, customer service, employee communications and public relations activities for the world's largest express transportation company.
Glenn joined FedEx in 1981 and has held management positions in the Sales and Marketing divisions.
Prior to joining FedEx, he worked in the Sales Division of the Dover Elevator Company.
A native of Memphis, Tenn., Glenn earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Mississippi and his MBA from The University of Memphis. Glenn currently serves on the board of directors for Youth Programs Inc., Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Deluxe Corporation and is on the Federal Reserve Bank's Transportation Committee.
Currently serving as Principal of the Memphis Academy of Health Sciences Middle School, Weathers, a native of Memphis and graduate of Bishop Byrne High School, earned four letters while playing tight end and split end for Ken Cooper and Steve Sloan at Ole Miss (1974; 1976-78). He served as a tri-captain, along with defensive tackle Lawrence Johnson and quarterback Bobby Garner, during his 1978 senior season.
During his career with the Rebels, Weathers earned second team All-Southeastern Conference honors as a junior and senior. Considered one of the most dedicated leaders on the squad, Weathers caught a team-best four passes in the 1977 upset (20-13) of eventual National Champ Notre Dame.
Weathers had 71 career pass receptions for 1,196 yards seven touchdowns, while averaging 16.9 yards per catch. Following that senior season in 1978, he ranked fifth all-time in receiving at Ole Miss and his 16.9 yards per reception was tops for Ole Miss receivers with 40 or more catches.
After playing in the Blue-Gray Classic and the Japan Bowl, he was then selected in the ninth round of the 1979 NFL draft by the Cleveland Browns. Weathers enjoyed a seven-year (1979-85) NFL career as a linebacker-tight end with the Browns, playing in 94 games.
Following his retirement from the NFL, Weathers took a marketing job with East Ohio Gas and began working with a local high school that East Ohio Gas had adopted. He then switched to education full time, taking a job with the Cleveland City Schools before returning to Memphis in 1998.
Four years ago, he was put in charge of building a new charter middle school from the ground up. His goal is to be No. 1 in academics, and media reports indicate his school is "one of the best-kept secrets in the Memphis City School system."
