Rebels Finish Up Play At Bulldog Scramble To Conclude Fall

11/5/2006 | Men's Tennis

ATHENS, Ga. The Ole Miss men’s tennis team finished up play at the Bulldog Scramble Sunday, going 11-6 on the weekend at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex to conclude a pretty successful fall.

Chris Rea of Madison, Miss., had the biggest weekend for the Rebels at the Bulldog Scramble, going undefeated in singles and doubles.   Included in his three singles wins, Rea knocked off Georgia’s Matic Omerzel, ranked No. 41 in the nation, 7-5, 6-3.

The Rebels went 4-0 in doubles on the weekend, including posting two wins over teams from 2006 NCAA runner-up Georgia.

In the Red Draw doubles, Rea teamed with Bram ten Berge to defeat Enrique Oliveras and Alex Ahlgren of East Tennessee State 8-3 in the final.  In the first round, they beat Georgia’s Ricardo Gonzalez and Jamie Hunt 8-6.  ten Berge and Rea ended the fall at 6-1.

Jakob Klaeson and Robbye Poole won the Black Draw doubles, downing Georgia’s Omerzel and Josh Varela 8-2 in the final.  Prior to that, the Reb duo defeated Daniel Isaza and Sebastien Serrano (ETSU), 8-4.  Klaeson and Poole, ranked No. 22 in the nation, concluded the fall at 4-1 and are now 15-4 since last season.

In singles, Poole won two out of three matches, both in straight sets, including a win over Georgia’s Gonzalez.  He lost his third match in three sets to UGA’s Hunt.

ten Berge also won two out of three, downing Serrano of ETSU 6-2, 6-1 and then topping Pedro Campos of South Carolina 6-3, 6-3.   He dropped his third match to South Carolina’s Yevgeny Supeko, 6-4, 6-3.

“Overall it was a pretty good weekend for the Rebels,” head coach Billy Chadwick said.  “We wish we could have won a few more matches today. The guys that Robbye and Bram faced both played well.  We played really good in doubles.

“We saw how good Georgia is.  They are the benchmark in the Southeastern Conference.  We feel we are right there with them.  We’ve had a good fall, but we are glad it’s over.  We know what we have to do to be ready in the spring to compete for the SEC Championship.”

While most of the team was in Athens, junior Erling Tveit represented the Rebels at the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, and advanced to the quarterfinals of the year’s second major.

The Rebels will kick off the spring Jan. 19-22 at the SEC Indoor Championships. Their first dual match will be Jan. 24 when they host Murray State at 2 p.m.
