Ole Miss Rifle Defeats UTEP

EL PASO, Texas The Ole Miss rifle team took to the road over the weekend and knocked off Texas-El Paso by a team aggregate score of 4564-4538. The Rebels were led by senior All-American Jennifer Lorenzen who posted scores of 581 in both the air rifle and smallbore.

“This was a great win,” said Ole Miss head coach Valerie Boothe. “We shot pretty well across the board and this is a big confidence boost for the rest of the season.”

Jessica Hornby turned a season-best mark of 583 to lead the Rebels in the air rifle. In addition to Hornby and Lorenzen, Mara Polonsky (576) and Pam Smith (562) competed in the air rifle. UTEP edged out Ole Miss in the team air rifle by a score of 2308-2302.

Lorenzen posted the match-best mark in the smallbore with her score of 581. The Rebels were helped out by the shooting of Hornby (566), Casey Phillips (564) and Polonsky (551). Ole Miss out-shot UTEP in the team smallbore by a score of 2262-2230.

“Jessica (Hornby) and Casey (Phillips) really stood out on the day,” said Boothe. “The whole team really pulled together and this gives us momentum going into the spring.”

Ole Miss concluded its fall schedule with the win over UTEP. The Rebels resume the 2006-07 season on Jan.20 at the Newkirk Invitational hosted by Tennessee Tech.
