Soccer Buzz Names Danielle Johnson Freshman All-American

12/14/2006 | Soccer

OXFORD, Miss. A day after earning All-Region honors, Ole Miss defender Danielle Johnson was named a third team Freshman All-American by Soccer Buzz on Wednesday evening.

The Baton Rouge, La., native becomes the fourth Freshman All-America selection in program history and the third since last year, joining current sophomores Christine Breaux and Jennifer Hance and the recently graduated Kelly Renie.

“I think Danielle is very deserving of this honor,” said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman. “It’s great for her to be recognized. She was outstanding in just about every game this year. She stepped right in and has been one of the best freshmen we’ve ever had.”

Johnson, who was one of three Rebels to start all 20 matches, showed her versatility on the pitch for the Rebels in 2006. She spent the majority of her time helping the Ole Miss defense rank first in the Southeastern Conference with five goals allowed and a 0.41 goals-against average in league play. She also slid into scoring position as a part-time midfielder and forward and ranked fourth on the squad with five goals and 11 points.

The rookie, who was earlier tabbed second team All-SEC and third team All-Region, led all Rebels with 1809 minutes played.

Ole Miss is expected to return nine starters for next year’s team, including Johnson and fellow All-SEC picks Chrissy Strini and Hance.
