OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss basketball player Todd Abernethy will be among the speakers at SOMA, an evening of music, worship and praise bringing together the University of Mississippi Christian organizations Thursday on the Grove stage.

The 7 p.m. program is to feature performances by praise bands from the Reformed University Fellowship, Campus Crusade for Christ, Baptist Student Union and Wesley Foundation. Rebels for Christ members plan to give testimonies and lead a cappella songs. It is free and open to the public.

Abernethy, a rising senior guard for the Rebels and member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, is slated to give his testimony. In addition, Bishop Anthony Barnes, a former player and brother of former Ole Miss basketball coach Rod Barnes, plans to share his message.

Along with the goal of more interconnected worship among Christian campus organizations, SOMA organizers are also encouraging other UM students, as well as high school juniors and seniors, to attend in order to see a side of Ole Miss that may often be overlooked.

This is SOMA's first year, and student organizers hope to turn it into an annual event. Freshman Tyler Sanders said the idea came about at a recent college student conference.
