One of the top students in the University of Mississippi business school also happens to know a thing or two about golf. Sarah Kate Cousart a senior from Athens, Georgia, has found success both in the classroom and on the golf course for the Ole Miss women's golf team. During her tenure as a Lady Rebel she has defined the role of the student-athlete.
Most college students have all the time in the world to focus their attention on school, but for college athletes their extra time is spent practicing, traveling and competing. Their biggest challenge is to find the time to complete the assignments or study for exams. This is a challenge that Cousart has easily defeated.
"It gets really hard sometimes to balance school and golf but I am here for school," says Cousart. "I am very lucky that I can play golf and go to school at the same time."
Cousart has found academic success in one of the top and most difficult schools on campus. The business school at Ole Miss is known for its intense courses. The Marketing major has rolled through the difficult program while also competing in golf in one of the top athletic conferences in the nation.
"The business school here is tough, everyone is real competitive," adds Cousart. "The competition just brings out the best in everyone. I enjoy being a part of it and it gives me a lot of pride."
Cousart gives some credit to her athletic background for her success in the books. Without her competitive spirit that derives from sports she would not be able to raise her game in the classroom, and she has consistently been a dominate student year after year. The level she competes at in academics has garnered her recognition for her hard work. Cousart is a four-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll and the NGCAA All-Scholar Team, becoming the first golfer at Ole Miss to do so all four years.
"Sarah Kate is a leader on the course as well as in school," said Ole Miss head coach Meghan Bolger. "She is a great role model for the team and an exceptional student-athlete. She takes pride in being successful in golf and in her studies."
Cousart is one of two senior members on this year's squad. Cousart is considered to be one of the veteran leaders on the team. While competing for Ole Miss she has made two NCAA tournament appearances. According to Cousart, golf is a hard to game to master, and for her the game is both a mental and a physical challenge.
"Sarah Kate immediately stepped in as a leader," says Bolger. "She is very easy to coach. She knows her game very well and comes from a strong golf family."
When it comes to golf and school Sarah Kate has had no problem handling both. As she closes in on her senior year she can look back at all of her accomplishments at Ole Miss. She has made it to the highest level in college golf by competing in the NCAA tournament. She has also worked hard in her studies to be at the top of many academic lists.
