Rebel Soccer Set To Host Exhibition Match Against Oklahoma State

8/18/2006 | Soccer

OXFORD, Miss. The 24th-ranked Ole Miss soccer team will cap off its preseason camp and prepare for a highly anticipated season with an exhibition match on Saturday against Big 12 opponent Oklahoma State at 6 p.m. at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.

The Rebels return all 11 starters and 20 letterwinners from last year’s SEC West Champion and NCAA Tournament team. On Thursday, Ole Miss was picked by the SEC coaches to repeat as Western Division champs.

“We’ve had a good preseason so far,” said Rebel head coach Steve Holeman. “We have had some intense practices. The opportunity to compete against somebody new will be good for us to see exactly where we are.”

Ole Miss suffered a 2-0 defeat in last year’s exhibition match against the Cowgirls, but won the two clubs’ only regular-season contest with a 3-1 victory in the 2000 season.

The Rebels hold a 12-4 advantage all-time against Big 12 foes, including a 2-0 win over Iowa State last year. This season, the Rebels will visit Colorado on Sept. 3 as part of the Colorado Nike Classic.

“We’re excited about being able to play a Big 12 opponent in the preseason,” Holeman added. “We had a great preseason match against Oklahoma State last year in Stillwater. They have some talented players, and we respect their coaching staff a lot. It will be a really good test for both teams.”

The regular-season slate begins on Friday, Aug. 25 with a home match against East Tennessee State at 7 p.m. The Rebels will then square off with 2004 National Champion Notre Dame, currently ranked No. 3 in the country, with a noon contest on Sunday at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.
