Ole Miss Soccer Kicks Off Preseason On Wednesday

OXFORD, Miss. - Preseason workouts for a much-anticipated Ole Miss soccer season began on Wednesday after 27 players, including seven newcomers, reported to campus Tuesday evening.
"We're very excited about this season," said head coach Steve Holeman, who is entering his 12th year as the only head coach in Ole Miss soccer history. "This is potentially one of the deepest teams that we've ever had, and the girls have been training hard throughout the spring and summer."
The Rebels return 20 of 22 letterwinners and all 11 starters from a 2005 squad that won the program's third Southeastern Conference Western Division title and made the program's third trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Among the returnees are junior midfielder Chrissy Strini, an honorable mention All-America selection a year ago, and sophomores Jennifer Hance and Christine Breaux, who earned Freshman All-America second- and third-team status, respectively.
Leading the way will be five Rebel seniors, including former All-SEC selections in forwards Brittney Potts and Kelly Renie and defender Lyndsey Williams, along with Ashley Ferree and Elise Karlowicz.
The coaching staff feels the team's depth will also be bolstered by the incoming freshman class.
"We have a strong recruiting class coming in, and we feel like several of the girls in our incoming freshman class can make an immediate impact," Holeman said.
The Rebels will host an exhibition match against Oklahoma State on Saturday, Aug. 19 at 6 p.m., before kicking off the 2006 campaign against East Tennessee State on Friday, Aug. 25 at 7 p.m. at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium in Oxford. Ole Miss will get an early test the following Sunday when 2004 National Champion Notre Dame comes to Oxford for only of the most anticipated non-conference matches in Rebel soccer history. That game is slated to begin at noon.
