9/20/2006 | Men's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. The Ole Miss men’s tennis team returns to the courts this weekend at two different tournaments.  Some members of the team will head to Waco, Texas, for the Baylor HEB Intercollegiate, while the rest of the team will be in Murfreesboro, Tenn., for the Middle Tennessee Fall Invitational.

This year’s Baylor Intercollegiate consists of 26 schools with over 120 student-athletes participating. The impressive field includes 31 players currently ranked among the FILA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s national rankings including 13 of the top 50 and four of the nation’s top 10.  In fact, almost half of the players in the gold draw are ranked nationally.

The tournament will consist of two 64-player singles draws, gold and green, and two 32-team doubles draws (gold and green).

Rebel junior Erling Tveit, ranked No. 8 in the nation, will be one of four players from the top 10 competing.   Baylor’s Lars Poerschke is the tournament’s highest ranked player at No. 4. Other top 10 participants include: No. 7 Amau Brugues (Tulsa) and No. 9 Jerry Makowski (Texas A&M).

Three Rebel players will participate in the tournament.  Joining Tveit in the field will be Bram ten Berge, ranked No. 97 and Robbye Poole, ranked No. 118.

The Middle Tennessee Invitational includes players from SEC schools Auburn, Kentucky, Mississippi State and Tennessee.  Five players from the current national rankings will be participating, including MTSU’s Andreas Siljestrom, who is ranked No. 32.

Jakob Klaeson, Chris Rea and Fredrik Aarum will be going to Murfreesboro. Ole Miss had both finalists in the top flight of last year's tournament.
