Rebels Shut Down Lady Razorbacks, Win 2-0

9/29/2006 | Soccer

OXFORD, Miss. Ole Miss pitched its second straight shutout and remained unbeaten in Southeastern Conference play with a 2-0 win over Arkansas on Friday night at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.

The Rebels (6-4-1, 2-0-1 SEC) are undefeated after three league matches for the first time in the program’s 12-year history.

“Tonight was a great win against a very good Arkansas team,” said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman. “We are actually coming together as a team, and we’re playing our best soccer right now. We are coming off a great weekend, and it was important to carry that momentum into this game against Arkansas.”

The two SEC West squads were unable to find the back of the net in the first half, despite eight shots by the Rebels and six by the Lady Razorbacks. Ole Miss fired off three shots in the game’s first four minutes, but were not able to find gold.

“The first half was pretty even,” Holeman said, “and we challenged our team to come out in the second half and put on a performance that we are capable of playing. We played extremely well in the second half, and it’s great that we were able to put two in the back of the net.”

The Rebels came out firing on all cylinders in the second half, dominating possession and getting off several early shots. The first near score for the Rebels came in the 59th minute, when freshman forward Hannah Weatherly snapped a low line drive toward the left corner of the goal, but Arkansas keeper Carrie Dillsaver made a diving grab to prevent the score.

Ole Miss got on the board in the 63rd minute when junior midfielder Chrissy Strini crossed from left to right and senior forward Kelly Renie knocked the ball with her body back across to the left corner of the net for the 1-0 advantage. The goal was Renie’s 31st of her career, moving her into sole possession of third on the all-time Rebel list past Jennifer Soileau (1997-2000) and Regan Scanlon (1997-2000), who both notched 30 career goals. Strini’s assist was her SEC-leading eighth of the year, as she passed her total of seven from all of last year.

The Rebel offense added another score at the 69:10 mark when freshman Danielle Johnson netted her fifth goal of the year with a strike from 15 yards off a Renie assist.

With an 11-2 shot advantage in the second half, Ole Miss out-shot Arkansas 18-9 in the match. The Rebels also produced five corner kicks to the Lady Backs’ two.

“In the first half we played well, but we didn’t play as well as we could,” Holeman added. “In the second half, we had our big-time players come out and play big.”

Junior goalkeeper Ann Shelton played 90 minutes of shut-out work between the posts, saving four shots. She earned her fourth shutout of the season and is now two shy of her mark of six shutouts in 2004.

Weatherly led the way with four shots, including three on goal, while Johnson and senior defender Elise Karlowicz each added three shots.

Arkansas (7-3, 0-2 SEC) was led offensively by Kathleen Paulsen, who fired off four shots, including three on goal. The top Lady Back goal-scorer, Christina Burger, was held to two shots.

Ole Miss will entertain a hot LSU team on Sunday at 1 p.m. to determine the leader in the SEC Western Division. Both teams stand at 2-0-1 in league play after the Tigers downed Mississippi State 1-0 on Friday.

“Sunday is a big test for us,” Holeman said. “LSU is very good team. They are playing great right now. We just have to go out there and continue doing what we are doing.”

Fans are encouraged to show up early as the first 200 through the gates will receive a free Ole Miss Soccer T-shirt courtesy of the Ink Spot. Ole Miss is trying to break the single-game attendance record as part of the “Stuff the Stands” promotion.
