Men's Tennis To Begin Fall Season In California

9/6/2006 | Men's Tennis

As the U.S. Open winds down this week, the Ole Miss men’s tennis team gets ready to kick off another season.  The Rebels will open the fall campaign Sept. 8-10 at the Napa Valley Classic hosted by the Meadowood Resort in Napa Valley, Calif.

Joining the Rebels in the four-team tournament is host California and 2006 NCAA “Sweet 16” qualifiers Illinois and North Carolina.  Illinois and UNC are making their second straight appearance in the tournament.

The Rebels, winners of five consecutive SEC Western Division titles, bring an experienced team to Napa Valley led by junior All-American Erling Tveit, an NCAA singles semifinalist last year.

Juniors Bram ten Berge (All-SEC), Robbye Poole and Jakob Klaeson and seniors Chris Rea and Fredrik Aarum complete the Rebel contingent.

“The Napa Valley Classic is one of the top tournaments in the fall,” said head coach Billy Chadwick, a 2006 Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame Inductee.  “This event features some of the top teams from around the country, and we are excited to be participating.  We will be facing some of the top singles and doubles players in the nation.”

California finished the 2006 season ranked No. 21 in the nation and is led by three seniors.  The Tar Heels advanced to the NCAA Final 16 for the first time since 1993 last year and ended the year ranked No. 12.  Illinois, who boasts the 2006 NCAA doubles champions, finished the season ranked No. 9 nationally.

Play will begin at 9 a.m. all three days.
