Ole Miss Rifle Finishes Third At Withrow Invitational

MURRAY, Ky. The Ole Miss Rebel rifle team once again turned in a strong performance in route to a third place finish at the Withrow Invitational over the weekend.

Shannon Wilson broke her own school record in the air rifle, which she set just two weeks ago, with a score of 592. This helped Ole Miss set a new school record in the team air rifle with a score of 2349 at the meet hosted by Murray State University.

“This was a very good weekend,” said Ole Miss head coach Valerie Boothe. “I think we are shooting pretty steady right now. We just need both guns (air rifle and smallbore) to come together on the same day.  I feel good about what we have accomplished so far, but we still need to step it up for that final push to make the NCAA championships.”

Wilson was not the only Rebel to step up in the air rifle. Senior All-American Jennifer Lorenzen fired a score of 589, while Jessica Hornby and Mara Polonsky added scores of 585 and 583, respectively. The team score of 2349 bested the previous record of 2342 set last season at the NCAA sectional meet.

On the smallbore side Loren fired a score of 573 and Wilson added a score of 569. Hornby and Polonsky fired scores of 556 and 554, respectively. The Rebels had a team aggregate of 2252 in the smallbore.

Murray State took home the overall team title with a score of 4617 and Jacksonville State finished second with an aggregate of 4607. Ole Miss placed third with a team score of 4601.

The Rebels also competed in the Tennessee-Martin Invitational over the weekend, but full results have not been made available.

Air rifle scores for the Rebels included Shannon Wilson (588), Jennifer Lorenzen (586), Jessica Hornby (578) and Mara Polonsky (575).

Smallbore score included Jennifer Lorenzen (574), Shannon Wilson (573), Jessica Hornby (560), Mara Polonsky (560). The Rebels finished with a team aggregate score of 4594.

Next up, Ole Miss travels to Morgantown, W.Va. on Feb. 3 for a match with West Virginia.
