Rebel Soccer Drops SEC Road Contest At No. 11 Tennessee
10/19/2007 | Soccer
Julie Edwards scored in the first half for the Lady Vols and Kylee Rossi added an insurance goal in the second period. Each team had six shots on goal, but the Rebels were unable to capitalize as UT goalkeeper Jaimel Johnson made all six saves.
“I thought we played really well tonight,” head coach Steve Holeman said. “It was actually a great game despite the two-goal outcome. We did a great job of possessing and creating opportunities. I think one of the big differences in the game was that they hit the crossbar and it went in, and we hit the crossbar and it bounced down and went out.”
At the 34:15 mark Edwards took a serve from Mick Ingram and fired from eight yards out on the right side. Her ball struck the bottom of the crossbar and bounced in for the winning goal.
The Rebels came out firing right after halftime. Just one minute into the period, the Rebels made a streak down the right side of the field and served it to freshman Erin Downing who fired a laser from 18 yards out. Unlike the UT score, her ball hit the bottom of the crossbar and bounced just inches away. The Rebels went on to take four straight shots and a corner kick in a 38-second span, but came up empty each time.
Incidentally, Ole Miss was without the services of two of its top offensive threats in Jennifer Hance and Amy Gill. The 5-foot-10 Hance missed the game due to receiving two yellow cards in the previous contest. Gill, a speedy forward/midfielder, is still recovering from a knee injury also suffered in Sunday’s match vs.
“I thought we played extremely well without them (Hance and Gill),” Holeman said, “but where we missed them was a lack of substitutions. We started to tire at the end of the first half and at the end of the game. I think that made a difference. It was a pretty even match all the way around, though. We had a lot of good chances, some open looks and some dangerous opportunities to score. You have to give some credit to their goalkeeper. She’s one of the best keepers in the SEC.”
Christine Breaux led the Rebels with four shots and two shots-on-goal, while Amy Bayles added three shots in the effort.
The Rebels lost an SEC contest for just the sixth time in the last three years.
Ole Miss closes out its challenging weekend with a trip to No. 17 Georgia on Sunday for the SEC Match of the Week. Kickoff against the SEC’s top squad entering the weekend is slated for 2 p.m. ET.
