Ole Miss' Wellermann Makes Final At ITA Southeast Regional

LEXINGTON, Ky. Matthias Wellermann of the Ole Miss men’s tennis team advanced to the finals of the ITA Southeast Regional, which will be played Monday afternoon at the University of Kentucky Boone Tennis Center.  

Wellermann was to have played teammate Erling Tveit in one of two semifinal matches, Monday morning, but Tveit, the tournament’s top seed withdrew due to a foot injury.  Wellermann will play the winner of Georgia’s Nate Schnugg and Miami’s Daniel Vallverdu.  Scnnugg defeated Rebel sophomore Kalle Norberg, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. 

Tveit dominated Kentucky’s Will Ward to reach the semifinals, while Wellermann defeated teammate Robbye Poole, 7-6(7), 7-6(7).  

In doubles, Wellernann teamed up with Bram ten Berge to post two wins to reach the semifinals.  In the round of 16, the pair downed Davey Sandgren and J.P. Smith of Tennessee, 8-4, before taking out Vik Subramanian and David Rosenfeld of Miami, 8-5 in the quarterfinals.  

They are trying to become the second Rebel doubles team to advance to the ITA National Indoor.  Tveit and Jonas Berg earned entry by virtue of their runner-up finish at the ITA All-American Championships.

The winners of the singles and doubles for each region gain automatic entry into the ITA National Indoor in November.  Quarterfinalists of each region will be considered for at-large selection to the 32-player singles draw.
