Wellermann Captures ITA Southeast Regional Singles Title

10/22/2007 | Men's Tennis

LEXINGTON, Ky. Senior Matthias Wellermann of the Ole Miss men’s tennis team captured the ITA Southeast Regional Championship Monday, to earn the region’s automatic berth into the ITA National Indoor in two weeks.

Wellermann advanced to the final when teammate Erling Tveit, the tournament’s top seed withdrew due to a foot injury.  The German native then defeated Miami’s Daniel Vallverdu, 7-6(5), 6-3 for the title.

“It was a great showing for the team, and a breakthrough tournament for Matthias,” head coach Billy Chadwick said.  “Placing four Rebels in the final eight, having a doubles finalist and winning the singles, got the attention of the entire region.”

This marks the second time in three years for the Rebels to capture the ITA Southeast Regional singles title.  Tveit won it in 2006.

Wellermann also teamed up with junior Bram ten Berge in the doubles final.  In the morning the pair defeated Alexey Tsyrenov and Terence Nugent of Auburn, 8-6 to reach the final.  The pair weren’t able to come away with the title, falling to Wellermann’s singles opponent, Vallverdu and his teammate, Carl Sundberg, 8-6, in the final.

Ole Miss will have at least three players in the ITA National Indoor.  Tveit and Jonas Berg gained automatic entry as the runner-up at the All-American Championships earlier this month.  By virtue of his No. 7 national ranking and reaching the semifinals at this tournament, Tveit will be strongly considered for an at-large selection in singles.

The Southeast Region is regarded as the nation’s toughest region with 11 teams making the NCAA field of 64 in 2007. Georgia was the national champion, while Ole Miss made the Sweet Sixteen and ended the year ranked No. 7 in the nation.

The ITA National Indoor Championships, the second college major, will be held Nov. 1-4 in Columbus, Ohio.
