Ole Miss-Southern Miss Hoops Series Announced

10/23/2007 | Men's Basketball

OXFORD, Miss. -- TeleSouth Communications in conjunction with The Mississippi Department of Tourism announces a three-year, three-game men’s basketball series between Ole Miss and Southern Miss.

The series will begin in Southaven at the Desoto County Civic Center on Dec. 28 at 7 p.m. CT. Fans may purchase tickets through Ticketmaster, either at one of its retail locations, or online at Ticketmaster.com. Tickets are $16 in advance or on gameday. Tickets for students and children 12 and under are $10 but can only be purchased at the game.

“We feel that this series will be great not only for both institutions but the entire state of Mississippi,” said TeleSouth Vice President Walker Jones. “These two teams haven’t played each other since 1995, and we are proud to play a role in bringing them back together again.”

The rivalry will move from Southaven to Jackson’s Mississippi Coliseum on Dec. 27, 2008, and the final game will be staged in Biloxi at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum with the date yet to be determined.

Each game will be treated as a neutral court for each team with game officials from both Conference USA and the Southeastern Conference.

“Larry and I both believe that the three-year series between Ole Miss and USM is good for basketball in our state,” said Ole Miss head coach Andy Kennedy. “I have great respect for the job Larry is doing, and I believe these three games will give our teams the challenges they need as they prepare for our conference schedules.”

The Rebels hold a 15-4 all-time edge in the series, which dates back to 1922. The last meeting was a 113-107 double overtime victory for Ole Miss in Oxford. This year’s encounter will mark the first between the two in Southaven.

“We are excited about the three-year arrangement to play Ole Miss in basketball,” said Southern Miss athletics director Richard Giannini. “I think it is great for the fans from both institutions and is very good for the overall promotion and marketing of basketball in the state of Mississippi.”
