Ole Miss Soccer Welcomes Commodores Thursday Night

10/24/2007 | Soccer

OXFORD, Miss. Coming off a scoreless tie at No. 17 Georgia, the Ole Miss Rebels (6-6-4, 3-3-2 SEC) return to Oxford for a Thursday night matchup with the Vanderbilt Commodores (5-8-2, 2-4-1 SEC). Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.

Thursday is “Greek Night” at the stadium. With free admission to all students, those in fraternities and sororities will get a chance to compete for prizes throughout the match. The winning fraternity and sorority will receive a free bowling party at “The Lanes.”

“This is another crucial game in the SEC,” Rebel head coach Steve Holeman said. “Both Ole Miss and Vanderbilt are looking for a much-needed win in the conference. First and foremost we know that we want to secure a spot in the SEC Tournament and this is a game that can help do that. Secondly we are still in the running for the SEC West title and we know we have to take care of our games one at a time.”

The Rebels return from a rigorous weekend in which they visited No. 11 Tennessee and the 17th-ranked Bulldogs. Ole Miss fared well, despite a 2-0 loss to the Lady Vols. The Rebels equaled the Lady Vols in shots attempted at 17-17 before equaling Georgia in that game’s final 0-0 score.

Ole Miss has three matches remaining in the regular-season schedule. After Thursday’s game with Vanderbilt, the Rebels travel to Kentucky on Sunday before closing out the regular season with senior day next Friday against Mississippi State. Ole Miss currently sits in seventh place in the overall SEC standings, with the top eight advancing to the conference tournament in Orange Beach, Ala., on Nov. 7-11.

Senior goalkeeper Ann Shelton recorded her first shutout of the season in Athens on Sunday. It was the 17th shutout of her Rebel career, which ranks second in school history and is also the active lead in the SEC.

Senior midfielder Chrissy Strini leads the Rebel squad with three assists and 11 points, while she and junior midfielder Jennifer Hance share the team lead with four goals.

A young Vanderbilt squad has struggled below .500 for much of the season. The Commodores are 2-4-1 in the SEC with wins over No. 20 South Carolina and Arkansas. Leading the offensive attack is freshman Molly Kinsella, who boasts a team-high six goals and three assists on the year.

“Vanderbilt is certainly much more talented than their record may indicate,” Holeman said. “They are young and have lost several very close games. We know it’s going to be a battle and we will have to play at our best to get a result.”

The Commodores own a 4-1-3 advantage in the all-time series. Ole Miss’ lone win came in 2001. The two teams have played to a tie in three of the last four contests, with Vanderbilt winning 2-0 last year in Nashville.
