Rebel Netter Tveit Advances To Third Round At All-American

TULSA, Okla. Senior Erling Tveit of the Ole Miss men’s tennis team won two matches on Thursday, to advance to the third round of singles at the ITA Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championships at the Michael D. Case Center.  He then teamed with Jonas Berg to win in doubles.

Tveit, seeded No. 7 in the field, was one of four of the top eight seeds to move on to Friday’s third round.

In the first round, Tveit faced a familiar opponent in Radford’s Martin Sayer.  When the two met in the quarterfinals at last year’s Baylor Invitational, Tveit won in three sets.  He would need three sets again.  After winning the first set 7-5, Tveit lost the second 7-5, before claiming the third 6-4. 

The second round went a lot quicker for Tveit, as he beat Texas’ No. 1 player Dimitar Kutrovsky, in straight sets (6-3, 6-4).  Kutrovsky, ranked No. 23 in the nation, has now lost twice to the Rebels this season, as Tveit’s teammate, Bram ten Berge, defeated the Longhorn at the Baylor Intercollegiate.

Tveit will face Virginia’s Treat Huey in the third round Friday at 10 a.m.

In other singles action, senior Robbye Poole lost his first round match to Alex Clayton of Stanford, 6-2, 6-3.  He rebounded to post a big win over Ryan Rowe of Illinois in the consolation bracket.

In doubles, Tveit and Berg defeated Luis Diaz Barriga and Ed Corrie of Texas, 8-6 in the first round.
