OXFORD, Miss. SEC Soccer Defensive Player of the Week Danielle Johnson had another honor come her way on Tuesday, as Soccer America named the Ole Miss sophomore to its National Team of the Week.
The center back from Baton Rouge, La., helped the Rebel soccer team to a 2-1 win over Auburn and 3-0 shutout victory over Alabama this past weekend. With the victories, Ole Miss vaulted into a tie for first place in the overall league standings and took over sole possession of first place in the Western Division.
Johnson was a key factor along the Ole Miss back line as the Rebel defense held Auburn to just nine shots and Alabama to six. She played every minute in the two matches, including all 103 minutes in the double-overtime contest vs. the Tigers. She leads Ole Miss with 1,148 minutes played on the year, having played the full length in all but one match.
It is the first national team of the week honor in Johnson’s career and the second for a Rebel this year, as senior Chrissy Strini was named to national teams of the week by Soccer America, Soccer Buzz and Top Drawer Soccer earlier this season.
Off to their best start through four league matches in school history, the Rebels returned to the NSCAA/adidas regional poll this week at No. 10 in the Central Region and climbed to No. 12 in the Soccer Buzz poll. Two more matches in Oxford await the Rebels this weekend, as they will host SEC East powers Florida and South Carolina on Friday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m., respectively.
