Rebel Rifle Finishes Third At Gamecock Invitational

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. The Ole Miss Rebel rifle team finished third over the weekend at the Jacksonville State Gamecock Invitational.

The Rebels were led by junior Jessica Hornby who fired an air rifle score of 585. Her total was the second-highest total of the match to Jacksonville State’s Michael Dickerson, who posted a score of 586. Others shooting for Ole Miss included Shannon Wilson (578), Erica Swanson (575), and Casey Phillips (571).  Ole Miss finished with a team air rifle score of 2308, second only to Jacksonville State’s score of 2325.

Hornby also led the way in the smallbore, with a score of 566. Erica Swanson (565), Shannon Wilson (563), Meredith Holman (559) and Corinne Hawkins (553) rounded out the Rebels’ smallbore roster. Ole Miss finished with a team smallbore score of 2217, which placed the Rebels fourth in the team smallbore scoring.

“We are a little disappointed in the results,” said Ole Miss head coach Valerie Boothe. “We had some equipment problems that we should have had that hurt us. It was just little things that added up. We will take the winter break to refocus on the rest of the schedule.”

Host Jacksonville State won the event with a team score of 4579. Murray State finished second with a team aggregate of 4579, as well. NCAA tie-breaking rules were used to determine the winner. Tennessee Tech (4515) and Memphis (4440) rounded out the meet.

Ole Miss travels to Ft. Worth, Texas January 19 to face host school TCU and UTEP.
