Randy Peele Postgame Quotes

12/13/2007 | Men's Basketball

Opening statement:

This was a very disappointing loss. I thought that after the first half, when we were down by two, that we had to control their shooting. They have only had one game in the 70’s. If you look at our first eight games, we have taken 418 shots. In the seven games that they have played, Ole Miss has 474 shots. So they have one less game and almost 60 more shots. That is a direct relationship to where the tempo of the game needs to be. They want the game to be in the 80’s and 90’s in scoring. If you look at us, we rarely have a game in the 80 to 85 range. So I really felt like keeping them in the 70s was the number.

On Ole Miss’ rebounding:

They rebound like a beast. We got beat because of three components. They got 21 second-chance points and 19 points off turnovers. Our first-shot defense was pretty good. Close to 40 points out of 76 were not because of our first-shot defense. At halftime they had 35 and 23 of them were off the second shots and turnovers. So they really rebound. They’re plus nine, and that’s an unbelievable number and that’s where they beat us.

On Winthrop’s defensive adjustments:

I tried to zone them and make them stand. To me that’s what you have to do. The crowd got in the game. We lost our composure. We took some shots that weren’t great shots. We just had a lack of poise. I thought what Andy did was spread us out and drive us and he did a great job of that.
