Ole Miss Hosts GARC Championships For Third Straight Year

2/24/2007 | Rifle

OXFORD, Miss. - Ole Miss will once again play host to this year's Great America Rifle Conference (GARC) Championships taking place at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center this weekend Feb. 24-25.

The tournament marks the third straight year that Ole Miss has hosted the conference championships. Ole Miss joined the GARC prior to the 2001-02 season.

"We're very excited to host the conference championships again and that everyone wants to come back," said Ole Miss head coach Valerie Boothe, last season’s Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association National Coach of the Year.

The GARC boasts some of the best rifle programs in the country, including three of the seven teams in the nation selected to participate in the NCAA Championships. Ole Miss joins NCAA participants Army, Kentucky and Nebraska, as well as conference rivals Memphis, N.C. State, West Virginia and Xavier, in the two day event.

The Rebels had a solid season in 2006-07. Ole Miss won two matches and finished second at the NCAA sectional. Junior All-America Shannon broke the school record in the individual air rifle (592), which she previously held with senior All-America Jennifer Lorenzen.

"We really hope to end the season on a good note,” Boothe said. “We are going to continue to do the same things we have been doing and hope everything comes together.”

The premier shooting facility at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center was completed prior to the 2004 season, and the Rebels have already hosted three home matches and a NCAA sectional this season.

Competition commences at 6:15 a.m. on Saturday and runs through Sunday afternoon. The smallbore competition begins on Saturday morning, while the air rifle portion starts Saturday afternoon.
