Rebels Finished Second In Air Rifle At GARC Championships

OXFORD, Miss.  Led by strong performances from Jessica Hornby, Jennifer Lorenzen and Shannon Wilson the Ole Miss Rebel rifle team finished runner-up in the team air rifle at the Great America Rifle Conference Championships on Sunday.

“I am proud of our team today,” said Ole Miss head coach Valerie Boothe. “This is our highest finish in a team event ever in the GARC. The girls knew what we had to do today and went out and got it done.”

Hornby, Lorenzen and Wilson all advanced to the finals in the air rifle and posted scores of 583 or better. In the finals Wilson finished fourth, Lorenzen placed fifth and Hornby finished seventh. Chris Abalo, of Army, won the individual air rifle.

Shannon Wilson led the Rebels in the air rifle with a score of 587, while Lorenzen added 584. Jessica Hornby posted a total of 583 and Mara Polonsky added a score of 574. The Rebels finished second in the team air rifle with a team aggregate of 2329. Kentucky won the team air rifle with a score of 2331.

Senior Jennifer Lorenzen, in her final home match, was the individual overall combined champion with a score was 1169. Lorenzen posted a match best score of 584 in the smallbore and finished sixth in the air rifle with a score of 585. She finished second in the smallbore on Saturday.

“This is a great accomplishment for Jennifer,” said Boothe. “This was her last hooray. I am proud of what see accomplishment today and in her career.”

Ole Miss finished fourth overall in the combined team aggregate with a team score of 4592. Kentucky took home the GARC Championship with a team score of 4630. Army (4628) finished second and Nebraska (4600) finished third. West Virginia (4552), Memphis (4536) and NC State (4503) rounded out the team scoring.

The GARC Championships concluded the Rebels team season. Lorenzen (smallbore) and Wilson (air rifle) will compete as individuals in the NCAA Championships beginning March 9 in Fairbanks, Alaska.
