JACKSON, Miss. -- Ole Miss' Todd Abernethy has been selected as one of three finalists for the 2007 Cellular South Howell Trophy, which will be awarded to Mississippi's best men's college basketball player on Monday.
The other finalists for the award, which is in its third year of existence, are Jamont Gordon from Mississippi State and Jackson State's Trey Johnson. The trio finished at the top of voting by 49 media members from across the state.
A senior guard, Abernethy received AP All-SEC and NABC All-District honors in leading Ole Miss to its first SEC West title and most wins (21) since 2001. The Carmel, Ind., native topped the SEC in assists per game (5.5) and assist/turnover ratio (2.9) while averaging 11.2 points. The three-year Team Captain finished his career with over 1,000 points and ranked top-five all-time in assists and 3-pointers in the Red and Blue.
All three finalists are expected to be on hand when the winner is announced at the Cellular South Howell Trophy presentation at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum, located at 1152 Lakeland Drive in Jackson. For ticket information, contact the Museum at 601-982-8264 or 800-280-FAME (3263). The reception begins Monday at 5:30 p.m. with the program starting at 7 p.m.
