Huertas Takes Goodwill Hoops Tour of Argentina

5/30/2007 | Men's Basketball

OXFORD, Miss. Ole Miss’ David Huertas recently joined a group of college players from the southeast on a SCORE International basketball team that took a goodwill tour of Argentina.

A rising redshirt sophomore who sat out last year after transferring from Florida, Huertas helped the SCORE squad post a 5-0 record against professional club teams, while spreading a positive message in their visit.

The 6-foot-5 guard hit two free throws with 14.7 seconds to seal a 95-92 win over the Obras Cobras, which included seven members of the Argentinean national team that won the gold medal in the 2004 Olympics. Huertas poured in 17 points in a matchup in the capital city of Buenos Aires and scored 15 before a capacity crowd in a win over Boca Junior Club, which is considered one of the nation’s premier teams.

Huertas, who is a native of Puerto Rico, was joined on the trip by Vanderbilt’s Jermaine Beal and JeJuan Brown, Mississippi State’s Phil Turner and Jarvis Varnardo, South Carolina’s Mitchell Carter, Chad Gray and Bryce Sheldon and Clemson’s David Potter. The team was coached by Tommy Kyle, head basketball coach at Decatur (Ala.) Heritage Christian Academy.

Huertas’ tour marked the seventh time for a Rebel to compete internationally over the last four summers, and the third to travel with SCORE International. Bam Doyne was part of a SCORE All-Star team in Germany in 2005, and Shaun Holtz visited the Dominican Republic in 2004.

SCORE International is a non-profit ministry based in Chattanooga, Tenn., that leads sports teams to do ministry projects while playing international teams.
