SEC Soccer Coaches Pick Rebels Second In West

8/21/2007 | Soccer

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. After finishing second in the Southeastern Conference Western Division behind Auburn in 2006, the Ole Miss soccer team was picked by the league coaches to do the same this year, in a preseason poll released Tuesday.

The Rebels, who have claimed three SEC West titles in program history, received 50 votes to the Tigers’ 58. Eight coaches voted Auburn to win the division, while four placed votes for Ole Miss.

Steve Holeman’s squad returns nine starters from last year’s team that finished 8-7-5 overall and 4-2-5 in league play. Among the returnees are 2006 All-SEC selections Chrissy Strini, Jennifer Hance and Danielle Johnson.

Florida was selected as the favorite to claim the 2007 title. The Gators are coming off a 2006 SEC Championship and a 14-win season. They earned nine first-place votes, topping a trio of SEC East teams with one vote each as SEC Champion.

Florida was selected tops in the East with 57 total points (nine first-place votes), ahead of Tennessee's 47 points.

Points were compiled on a 6-5-4-3-2-1 basis for each division, though each coach was not allowed to vote for their own team.  Each coach also voted for one team as an overall conference champion.

The 2007 season begins August 31, with conference play set to begin September 27.  The 2007 SEC Tournament will be held November 7-11 at the Orange Beach Sportsplex in Orange Beach, Ala.
