Rebel Netters Among Nation's Best

9/11/2007 | Men's Tennis

OXFORD, Miss. Members of the Ole Miss men’s tennis team earned recognition, as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) announced its preseason singles and doubles national rankings.

Ole Miss boasts two players in the top 20 and four overall in singles.  Two doubles teams also earned national rankings.

Senior Erling Tveit begins the season ranked No. 7 in the nation.  This marks the second consecutive year for Tveit to begin the year ranked in the nation’s top 10. He became the first Rebel to earn All-America honors multiple times in singles and doubles in 2007, while also maintaining a 4.0 grade point average.

Fellow senior Robbye Poole earned his first career top 20 ranking, coming in at No. 18.  Poole enjoyed an excellent campaign in 2007, earning All-America honors and leading the team with a 33-10 record.

Senior Matthias Wellermann is ranked No. 89.  He saw limited action in singles in 2007 while dealing with a back injury, but is ready to go this year.

Junior Jonas Berg was automatic for the Rebels last year, going 20-1 in dual matches, earning him a preseason ranking of No. 95.

In doubles, Tveit finds himself in the rankings again, but with a new partner.  Tveit is coming off back-to-back final top 10 national rankings with former All-American Eric Claesson.   With Claesson having finished his career, Tveit and Berg have teamed up for a ranking of No. 20.

Poole and Jakob Klaeson are ranked No. 39 in doubles.  The two have played together for two years and own a 21-8 record.

The Rebels return seven of the top eight from last year’s team that won its sixth consecutive SEC West title, finished second overall in the conference, advanced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen and ended the year ranked No. 7 in the nation.

The first team rankings do not come out until January. To view the complete singles and doubles rankings go to olemisssports.com and click on the link to ITA Rankings on the left side of the men’s tennis page.
