Rebels Take Down Knights 1-0

9/16/2007 | Soccer

OXFORD, Miss. Chrissy Strini scored at the 65:51 mark in the second half and Ole Miss displayed solid defense throughout Sunday’s match as the Rebels earned their second win of the weekend with a 1-0 victory over the University of Central Florida at the Ole Miss Soccer Stadium.

Ole Miss (3-1-2) got its second straight win over a Conference USA opponent after downing the Rice Owls 2-1 on Friday.

Head coach Steve Holeman’s club amassed a 15-11 shot advantage over UCF (4-2-0) and also led in corner kicks 6-4.

“I thought this was a great game,” Holeman said. “I think that that was about as close as we could play to a complete 90-minute game. I thought we played extremely well, and we beat a very good team today. Central Florida is going to have a successful season. Our goal for this weekend was to get back on track and get back on the winning side and go 2-0.”

The Rebels and Knights were scoreless after a half, with Ole Miss controlling play for most of the period and racking up nine shots to UCF’s four. The Rebels nearly scored five minutes into the match when junior defender Christine Breaux drilled a deep shot that nicked off the keeper’s fingertips before knocking off the crossbar.

Ole Miss continued to attack in the second half and held off a determined Knight side as UCF out-shot the Rebels 7-6 in the period.

Strini, a two-time All-SEC midfielder from Cordova, Tenn., scored the eventual game-winner in the 66th minute. After sophomore Hannah Weatherly made a streak down the right side, she corralled a ball off a defender and served it to the center of the penalty box where the senior struck it from five yards out off the left post and in. It was Strini’s third goal of the young season. She scored her only goal of the 2006 campaign in the regular-season finale at Mississippi State. She also took a game-high five shots and two shots-on-goal.

“It’s very deserving that Chrissy got the game-winning goal,” Holeman said. “We played her in a different role today, and she was the difference. She held the ball for us and she was a playmaker. She is a complete player. She’s so good on the ball and she’s so dynamic. She’s good on set pieces, and she’s a player that can score goals, and it’s great to see her early on with her third goal.”

Another strong defensive showing gave Ole Miss its third shutout of the season. Goalkeepers Megan Vickery and Ann Shelton each logged a perfect half between the posts, with Vickery making one save and Shelton two.

Next weekend the Rebels play the final two of six straight C-USA squads when they travel to face the Memphis Tigers on Friday before returning to Oxford to square off with Colorado College on Sunday.
