Rebels Threaten, Finish in Soccer Tie with USF

9/2/2007 | Soccer

OXFORD, Miss. Despite several scoring opportunities, Ole Miss was unable to deliver on a goal in a scoreless tie with South Florida Sunday on the soccer field.  Defensively, it was the team's second shutout in the season's first three matches.

The Rebels (1-0-2) controlled play throughout the match and finished with a 12-3 advantage in shots and a 6-0 edge in corner kicks.

Among Ole Miss’ threatening opportunities, Tupelo native Hannah Weatherly ripped a deep shot from the top of the box that clanked off the crossbar at the 67:47 mark. Fellow sophomore Jennifer Hance also had a pair of dangerous headers in the 85th  minute, one stopped by a USF defender and the other turned away by keeper Mallori Lofton-Malachi, who recorded three saves for the Bulls (0-0-1).

The Rebels mustered two more shot attempts in the first overtime but failed to connect in notching their second tie of the weekend.

“I thought we played well enough to win,” said Ole Miss head coach Steve Holeman. “We had trouble finding the back of the net. The challenged us with a defensive system that was very compact. They did a good job of keeping us off the scoreboard. We just need to learn to find ways to score.”

The Rebels, who have surrendered only one goal through the first three matches, face their first road tests of the young season next weekend, traveling to Conference USA foes Southern Miss and UAB. The encounter with in-state rival USM is Friday at 4 p.m. CT, while Sunday’s game with the Blazers is set for 3 p.m.
