Rebel Netters Move On At Baylor Invitational

9/21/2007 | Men's Tennis

WACO, Texas Four members of the Ole Miss men’s tennis team advanced to the third round of singles at the H.E.B. Baylor Invitational Friday at the Baylor Tennis Center.  Two of the Rebel doubles teams advanced to the quarterfinals.

“We had a great day,” head coach Billy Chadwick said.  “Bram (ten Berge) picked up a huge win in the second round, and Matthias (Wellermann) looked good too.  Erling (Tveit) and Robbye (Poole) played very well.”

Tveit, the No. 1 seed in the tournament, was impressive on day one.  He downed New Mexico State’s Jim Brouleau 6-3, 6-0 in the first round before not allowing his next opponent, Mike Pavlov (Texas A&M-CC) a game in the second round to move onto the round of 16.  The nation’s No. 7 ranked player, Tveit will face Andrei Daescu of Oklahoma Saturday.

Poole, seeded No. 2, won both his matches in straight sets to advance.  He cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win over Christian Coetzee of San Diego in the first round and then defeated Rodrigo Morgado 6-4, 6-4.  Poole, ranked No. 18 in the country, will meet David Simon of Louisville in the third round.

Wellermann came back from a set down in his opening match to defeat Robin Fernandes of Texas-San Antonio, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.  He then handed Jordan Rux of Baylor a 6-3, 7-6(4) loss, setting up a third-round meeting against BU’s David Galic.

Seeing his first action since last fall, ten Berge moved into the third round with an impressive three-set win over the No. 3 seed, Texas’ Dimitar Kutrovsky.   Kutroskvy played No. 1 for the Longhorns last year and is ranked No. 23 in the nation.  ten Berge won the first set 6-4 and then dropped the second 7-5 before claiming the third 6-4.  In the first round, ten Berge beat Chris Chirico of Texas A&M 6-0, 6-4.

In doubles, ten Berge and Wellermann beat Adam Becker and Morgado of UTSA 9-8 in the first round and then downed Poitr Dilaj and Steve Robertson of Boise State, 8-3.  They will face the nation’s fourth-ranked team, Kutrovsky and Josh Zavala of Texas in the quarterfinals.

Tveit teamed up with Jonas Berg for an 8-4 win over David Costa and Roman Orgakov of Texas-Arlington in the first round.  In the second round the No. 2 seeded duo topped Moritz Baumann and Nolan Polley of Wisconsin, 8-5.
