Early UAB Goal Hands Soccer Its First Loss
9/9/2007 | Soccer
Following UAB midfielder Justine Hartigan’s goal just 18 seconds into the match, the Rebels dominated the run of play for much of the contest. Ole Miss piled up 21 shots in the contest, while defending Conference USA Tournament Champion UAB managed 10 shots.
The Rebels put continual pressure on UAB throughout the match, producing five shots-on-goal and several close calls including a Hannah Weatherly shot that bounced off the post with just over five minutes remaining, but Ole Miss could not find the back of the net to equalize UAB’s early score.
“We definitely played well enough to win,” head coach Steve Holeman said. “We created more good goal-scoring opportunities in this game than any of our previous games. It’s very disappointing that we couldn’t put the ball in back of net with the number of opportunities we had. But if you don’t score you can’t win.”
Junior midfielder Jennifer Hance led the offensive attack with six shots, while freshman forward Macie Williams fired four shots, including three on goal.
Blazer keeper Kate Blankenship kept the Rebels off the board by grabbing five saves in her shutout performance.
UAB stayed perfect against SEC opponents this weekend after having downed Vanderbilt by a 2-1 score on Friday.
Ole Miss drops to 2-1 in the all-time series with UAB after winning in 2000 and 2001.
