Ole Miss Rifle Falls To TCU, UTEP

FORT WORTH, Texas The Ole Miss Rebel rifle team dropped its first two matches of 2008 to Texas-El Paso and host school TCU, over the weekend.

The Rebels lost both matches only by a combined 100 points, as they were topped by the Horn Frogs by a team aggregate of 4637-4554 and fell to the Miners, 4575-4561.

“I though we shoot well at points, but just couldn’t put it all together,” said Ole Miss head coach Valerie Boothe. “One day some were shooting well and the others were not. The next day it was reversed. We just couldn’t shoot on the same page.”

Against UTEP Ole Miss was led by senior All-American Shannon Wilson. The Fairfax Va. native led the squad with a smallbore score of 582, and was second on the team with an air rifle score of 584.

The Rebels knocked off UTEP 2265-2264 in the smallbore, but were unable to hold on to the lead as the fell by a score of 2314-2296 in the air rifle.

Jessica Hornby (572), Erica Swanson (555) and Casey Phillips (556) rounded out the Rebels smallbore squad, while Hornby (585), Swanson (565), Stacie Leatherman (562) contributed to the air rifle efforts.

Swanson led the way for Ole Miss against TCU. The freshman from Boonsboro, Md. posted a mark of 581 in the air rifle to pace the Rebels. Also scoring in the air rifle were Horny (579), Wilson (577) and Leatherman (564). TCU out-shot Ole Miss 2330-2301 in the air rifle.

In the smallbore Ole Miss fell 2307-2253. Wilson (567), Hornby (565), Swanson (564), and Phillips (557) combined in the smallbore for Ole Miss.

Ole Miss will host Great America Rifle Conference foe Nebraska on Feb. 2 at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center in Oxford.
