Ole Miss Ends Stay At ITA Southeast Regional

10/19/2008 | Men's Tennis

LEXINGTON, Ky. The Ole Miss men’s tennis team ended its stay at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships Sunday morning, as senior Jonas Berg fell in two close sets to the tournament’s No.1 seed, in the quarterfinals.

Berg, the lone Rebel left in the singles field, played Daniel Vallverdu of Miami and just missed out on sending the match to a third set, falling in a second-set tiebreaker, 7-6(6) after dropping the first set 6-3.  Vallverdu is ranked No. 3 in the preseason national rankings.

The winners of the singles and doubles as well as the singles finalist receive a berth in the ITA National Indoor in November.  Berg and his partner Bram ten Berge earned a spot in the doubles field by winning the All-American Championships earlier this month.

The ITA Southeast Region is the toughest region in the nation with seven teams finishing the 2008 season ranked in the Top 25.  Eleven players from the Southeast Region are ranked in the preseason singles top 50, and eight doubles teams are in the top 25.
