OXFORD. Miss. The Ole Miss men's tennis team is gearing up for the year's first major national championship, the ITA D'Novo All-American Championships, which is taking place this week in Tulsa, Okla.
The prequalifying tournament was held this past weekend, with 16 players advancing into the qualifying tournament, which begins Monday. That is where the Rebels begin their tournament.
Seniors Jonas Berg and Bram ten Berge as well as junior Kalle Norberg are in the qualifying singles. Berg and ten Berge, ranked No. 9 in the nation, are in the main draw in doubles. Sixteen players will advance from the qualifying draw to the main draw in singles.
Ole Miss kicked off the year in Flushing, N.Y. by winning the singles and doubles titles at the USTA Men's Tennis Invitational. Berg defeated teammate Norberg in the singles final, while he and ten Berge captured the doubles.
"We got the year off to a great start, and now we are looking forward to continuing our success at one of the top individual tournaments in the country," head coach Billy Chadwick said. Many of the nation's top players are featured at this tournament."
ten Berge, ranked No. 58 in singles, is seeded No. 11 in the draw of 128 and will face a qualifier in the first round Monday. Berg, ranked No. 92 in singles, plays Roman Stoisavljevic of New Mexico State, and Norberg will face Mike Sroczynski of Michigan.
The Rebels have had recent success at the All-American. Berg teamed up with former three-time All-American Erling Tveit to reach the doubles final at last year's tournament, and former All-American Catalin Gard won the singles title in 2004.
